The Turtles were sort of The Monkees in reverse. They started as a legit band, but their label simply wanted them to churn out the current bubble gum flavor of the week. The band decided to poke fun at the concept with the song Elenore. It backfired when folks didn't realize it was a send up, making it a huge hit!
